One of the most common questions customers ask is, “How can I make the most out of my wardrobe?” I think when customers are coming into our Los Angeles boutique, Salt and Freckles, they are looking for pieces to incorporate in their existing wardrobe easily and seamlessly.

Questions We Ask Before Creating a Wardrobe

To do this, we evaluate a few factors to pick out the perfect pieces for her:

1. What does her average day look like?

one of the first things I want to know when helping style a customer is what that woman’s day is like. Is she going to work? Chasing a toddler? Or, maybe a bit of both?  The more we can understand a customer’s lifestyle, the more likely we are able to find great pieces to compliment her existing wardrobe.  

2. What style is she most comfortable in?

The second piece of info that is crucial in finding timeless pieces that we know a customer will wear and love, is figuring out that woman’s style.  It may sound like an easy question, but it’s the one thing customers have the most difficult time pinpointing. A great way to identify a woman’s style is to ask her what she feels most comfortable in. Is she a jeans and tee kind of gal, or does she prefer to wear dresses, skirts and blouses? Flats or boots? Does she feel comfortable stepping outside of her fashion comfort zone, or does she like to stick with her basics?

Once we get a feel for a customer’s overall lifestyle and go-to style, we can start building a dressing room that she is likely to have more luck in! Nothing is worse than being overwhelmed in a dressing room with a bunch of pieces that just don’t feel like you!

Breathing New Life into an Existing Wardrobe

Something our Los Angeles stylists focus on is making the most out of a customer’s existing wardrobe by breathing new life into pieces they already love wearing by finding new pieces that compliment those staples. For example, if a client has a pair of denim jeans that she loves wearing,  we will find great tops and outerwear that make those jeans pop and feel like new!

I always recommend that clients stick with quality neutrals when building out a wardrobe.  Finding a great cream or black sweater, an incredible blazer, a great fun faux fur jacket, or a flattering blouse that can be worn day to night, for work or play, is a great way to pump up those jeans she can’t live without. 

A great rule of thumb is to splurge on quality pieces that are staples and simple. Spend a little less on those trendy pieces that may be around for only a couple of seasons! That way, you utilize all your current favorites by spicing them up with other timeless pieces...and adding a little pop of fun without spending your entire paycheck.
